Toxic Plants for Cats<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though the holidays hit in the dead of winter, plants are popular during this time. You might be tempted to pick up a pretty poinsettia from the grocery store while you\u2019re doing some holiday shopping. Or a festive amaryllis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t do it. These plants can be toxic to cats\u2014especially amaryllis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a non-exhaustive list of toxic holiday plants for cats:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Poinsettia: <\/strong>Contains sap (and usually pesticides) that can irritate your cat\u2019s esophagus and make her sick.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Amaryllis: <\/strong>Contains lycorine, a toxin that can make your kitty very sick.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lilies: <\/strong>If a plant has \u201clily\u201d in the name or comes from the Lilium or Hemerocallis genera, give it to a cat-free friend, as lilies are toxic to cats.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Holly and mistletoe:<\/strong> The leaves and berries alike can be deadly to cats.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fir, spruce, and pine trees:<\/strong> AKA, Christmas trees! That\u2019s right. Cats and Christmas trees don\u2019t necessarily mix. These trees have needles that can be mildly toxic to cats.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Your best bet is to set up a fake Christmas tree and fake plants that look real. These include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Peppermint<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cinnamon<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Citrus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wintergreen<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tea Tree<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Birch&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember that many potpourri mixes contain these oils, too, so keep those away from your furry friends as well.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Ribbons and Tinsel&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You might not use tinsel or ribbons to decorate your home <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shilohsvet.com\/blog\/happy-hairy-hoppy-holidays-creating-a-magical-season-for-your-pets\/\">during the holidays<\/a>, but are they on the gifts Santa brought under the tree? Or wrapped around the bottle of wine your coworker gave you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep a close eye on any tinsel, ribbon, or stringlike decorations or gift-wrapping accessories in your home. These objects are harmful because they look like toys\u2014but they\u2019re not. If eaten, the ribbon or tinsel can bunch up in your kitty\u2019s intestines and cause a life-threatening blockage. It can even slice through vital organs, causing irreparable damage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So keep this holiday hazard far, far away from your beloved feline friend!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Salt-Dough Ornaments<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe your kids or grandkids brought salt dough ornaments home from school. These precious ornaments last forever, giving you fond memories for years to come.
